About Our Guests

Zella's Bakery, headquartered in Detroit Michigan, and founded by sisters Tolani Anthony and Maia Anthony, provides their customers with unique, enjoyable, sweet and savory treats prepared like their grandma!

As a child, Tolani was enamored by the baking skills of her grandmother, Rozella Jermaine, and learned as much as she could. Tolani recently graduated from the exceptional culinary program at Michigan’s Schoolcraft College and left jobs with the City of Detroit and Wayne County to pursue her dream of operating a catering company full time. Tolani primarily handles the creative side of the business.

Maia was already an entrepreneur, specializing in voiceovers, industrial commercials, and hosts a Detroit-based cooking show, “Eats in the D.” It was a natural expansion for Maia to become the business manager for the company, bringing marketing experience to the company.

What Our Guests Talked About

Tolani and Maia discussed the successes and challenges of setting up and running their business and how they complement each other with their unique skillsets. While Zella’s is still primarily a bakery, the sisters are working on adding more sweet and savory items to their menu. Maia adheres to a plant-based diet while Tolani does not; both options, plus several gluten-free items, are available to their customers.

In addition to catering, the sisters also do popups around the city and the surrounding area. In addition to the wonderful aromas and delicious menu items, the sisters emphasize that presentation is very important. They work very hard to ensure that everything looks and tastes the very best possible because their business is a representation of each of them separately and together.

Words of Wisdom

Tolani and Maia advise that anyone starting and running a business remember that they can’t do everything. Take the time needed to set up everything step-by-step and grow the business naturally and organically.
