Welcome to this week’s episode of the YB2C Live! Podcast for Entrepreneurs. Every week we discuss the entrepreneurial journey, including interviews with business owners of all sizes from Detroit and all over the world who share their stories to give you inspiration, motivation, and tips for overcoming challenges and achieving success for your business.
This week, for Episode #53, and in honor of Black Music Month, which is celebrated every June, we welcome John E. Lawrence, a master musician, visual artist, author, and business owner. John tells his story about when he decided to walk away from a good job in an auto plant outside of Detroit Michigan, and turn his musical talent into a commercially successful career for himself, making an income rivaling that of attorneys, doctors, and other professionals.
In this episode, John describes how he started playing the guitar at age 9, but thought he needed to have a “good job” to have a “good life,” and after high school, like many others, he went to work in an auto plant near his home. He was working twelve hours a day, seven days a week, from 1 pm to 1 am. Although he was making good money, John knew this was not how he wanted to live the rest of his life. He decided that he would figure out how to take his musical talent and make a new life and a new career for himself.
Along the way, John found some wonderful mentors who helped him and opened up other great opportunities for him, but all the time, he was building a business with his music, developing multiple streams of income.
John recently published a book that gives musicians just about everything they need to know to make a full-time career of their musical talent: Business Management for Musicians: Making Money Making Music, which was published in March 2018 by our company, Detroit Ink Publishing. The book is available on Amazon and through John’s website.
