Welcome to this week’s episode of the YB2C Live! Podcast for Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners. Every week we discuss the entrepreneurial journey, including interviews with business owners of all sizes from Detroit and all over the world who share their stories to give you inspiration, motivation, and tips for overcoming challenges and achieving success for your business.
This week, for Episode #39, we welcome Stephanie and Tyrone Dickey of Stef-n-Ty Boutique, a unique clothing store and coffee house located in the North End Neighborhood in Detroit Michigan.
Stephanie and Tyrone describe their 25-year journey of starting, building, and growing their company, which is known all over the world for its unique hat designs, as well as tell us about working a business as a married couple, also for over 25 years. For the most part, Stephanie is the designer and oversees the production of the hats and other clothing items available at their store, and Tyrone handles the business end of the business, including the marketing and social media.
Ty talks about how he often travels to different cities to have trunk shows, which he says are now known as “popups,” and Stephanie describes how she uses a creative mix of recycled textiles for her one-of-a-kind hats. They have built their brand to a point where when someone is wearing one of their hats, people automatically know that it is a “Stef-n-Ty” original design!
Our guest couple tells us how they’ve moved their business to various cities, including Baltimore and New York, and why they finally decided to make Detroit their permanent home. Even after moving to Detroit, Stef-n-Ty has moved their location several times but now consider the North End the perfect spot because of its location on Woodward and vibrant community of long-time residents and businesses, as well as newcomers to the Detroit creative community.
In addition to their store, Stephanie and Tyrone also offer sewing classes, shows for other designers, and a “come and shop” coffee bar, as they continue to integrate themselves and their business into the surrounding neighborhood.
